His practice is focused on all aspects of intellectual property, including licensing and transfer of a wide spectrum of technologies and pharmaceutical products, and related enforcement and prosecution of intellectual property, trade-marks, patents, copyright, intellectual property litigation, commercial litigation in front of all courts in Canada, and drug approval. He also practices in I.P. related business law, such as distribution and joint venture agreements. He is often involved in matters related to the Food & Drug Act and with Health Canada.
Mr. Barrette is a Fellow of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada. He is also member of the Canadian Bar Association, the Association des praticiens du droit des marques et des modèles (APRAM), the Pharmaceutical Trademark Group (PTMG). He has been appointed to the Amicus Curiae for Canada of the International Trademark Association (INTA) and is also a member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA) and of the Association MARQUES. He is the president of the trademark committee of the Canadian group of the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AIPPI) since 2015. Mr. Barrette is an administrator of the Corporation de la Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours and of the Musée Marguerite-Bourgeoys since 2014.
Mr Barrette has served as Secretary of the Board of Directors of the Quebec's Council of Food Processing and Products (CTAQ) since March 2000, and was renewed as Secretary and appointed to the Board of Directors in March 2004 and yet again renewed in 2015. He was appointed Ambassador of the Association des Praticiens Européens des Brevets (A.P.E.B.) and is member of the Board of the Palliative home-care Society Foundation .
Mr. Barrette lectured at the Intellectual Property intensive courses supplied by the IPIC and McGill University. From November 1999 through December 2000, Mr. Barrette served as Vice-President of Legal Affairs, General Counsel and Secretary of Procyon Biopharma Inc. (TSX: PBP), a company specializing in cancer research.
